19th August 1990 Parramatta 14 (Glen Liddiard, Scott Mahon, Mark Laurie tries, Scott Mahon goal) defeated Balmain 10 (Steve O'Brien, Tim Brasher tries, Ian McCann goal). Venue: Leichhardt. Crowd: 14,943. Referee: Greg McCallum. Official Yearbook of the NSWRL David Middleton Balmain's plans of a victorious farewell for Wayne Pearce from his beloved Leichhardt Oval were dashed by the enthusiasm and class of Parramatta. The Eels had no hope of making the semi-finals, but their determination to win was no less apparent. Parramatta ignored the sentiment of Pearce's last game before his home crowd to lead 10-0 at halftime and 14-4 shortly after. Without Steve Roach and Paul Sironen, Balmain's pack lacked a lot of sting and Parramatta were able to gain easy ground close to the rucks. This provided the ideal situation for Peter Sterling to dictate play in his inimitable style. Sterling called the shots and his backs responded. Fullback Glen Liddiard played one of his finest hands, while Brett Kenny, so often Balmain's nemesis, again tormented the Tigers. Balmain hit back strongly after halftime, with tries to Tim Brasher and Steve O'Brien, but in a tense final 20 minutes they could not break through for the match-winning try. After the match, Pearce completed an emotional lap of Leichhardt Oval to a standing ovation from the crowd. Big League Guide
