5th March 1988 Parramatta 28 (Michael Erickson, Steve Ella, Eric Grothe, Peter Wynn tries, Steve Ella 6 goals) defeated Newcastle 4 (Robbie Tew 2 goals). Venue: Newcastle ISC. Crowd: 26,340. Referee: Graham Annesley. Official Yearbook of the NSWRL David Middleton The Newcastle Knights were given a tough re-introduction to the Sydney premiership by a menacing Parramatta outfit before 26,340 people. The Knights were playing their first Sydney premiership match since 1909 and were greeted by a record crowd at Newcastle's International Sports Centre. Newcastle, in their red and blue strip, led 2-0 early after a goal to former Redcliffe five-eighth Robbie Tew but when Parramatta's Steve Ella equalized just two minutes later, the match began to turn. The Knights were submerged under a Parramatta backline wave, with the "old brigade" of Sterling, Kenny, Ella and Grothe combining with devastating effect. The match was won and lost at halftime - Parramatta led 16-2 - then drew away in the second half despite some encouraging signs from the Knights. Newcastle's reserves gave the club it's first premiership win with a sparkling 20-6 victory in an historic and long awaited day for the northern city. Peter Wynn
