25th July 1987
Parramatta's Peter Sterling turned in a performance rated by many to be the perfect game of Rugby League as he almost single-handedly tore premiership hopefuls Easts to pieces at Parramatta Stadium. He scored three tries himself and threw the final pass for the other three in an awesome display. Sterling seemed to pour out the frustrations of a dim season. It was one of those rare days when everything worked to perfection. What Sterling decided to do, always happened, and the high flying Roosters had no comeback. The Test halfback ran, created openings, backed up the forwards, kicked, passed, caught, covered, defended and scored. Brett Scott, Peter Ford, Mark Laurie and Peter Wynn would have earned big wraps on any other day, but compared to Sterling's performance, theirs were merely cameo roles.
Parramatta 32 (P.Sterling 3, P.Ford, P.Wynn, B.Scott tries, R.Slater 4 goals) defeated Easts 2 (D.Smith goal). Referee: B.Harrigan. Crowd: 9,233.
