19th September 1982 Rain fell all morning in the lead up to the 1982 preliminary final, and many observers thought the conditions would favour Easts. Those same observers had certainly never reckoned on the seven tries to nil slaughter the Eels were due to serve up later in the day. Easts went into the match minus chief playmaker Kevin Hastings, but 'Horrie' would have made little difference as the Eels produced the sort of scintillating running play expected of them, in the mud. Parramatta won 33-0. The avalanche started when referee John Gocher disallowed a fourth-minute try to Steve Ella. The Eels decided to vent their rage on their hapless opponents and Peter Sterling, Eric Grothe and Brett Kenny each scored tries between the nineteenth and twenty-sixth minutes. Kenny's came from the kick-off after Grothe's try. Mick Cronin (who finished the match with a personal tally of eighteen points) also scored for Parramatta to lead 16-0 at halftime. Easts slim hopes vanished completely when Cronin scored his second try in the forty-fourth minute and Parramatta led 21-0. More tries followed to Grothe again and Ella. Parramatta 33 (M.Cronin 2, E.Grothe 2, B.Kenny, P.Sterling, S.Ella tries, M.Cronin 6 goals) defeated Easts 0. Referee: J.Gocher. Crowd: 24,637. The Finals. The History of NSW Rugby League Finals.
