Classy Eels overrun Dragons

Classy Eels overrun Dragons
The Eels eased past the Dragons to open their account in the third game of the Downer NRL Auckland Nines.
Just 35 seconds into the match Dragons rookie Jai Field split the Parramatta defence in half with an electric jink and run, which saw him go 80 metres and score.
But it was Parramatta who took a comfortable 17-4 lead into half-time after Kenny Edwards and Suaia Matagi powered their way over from close range, and Clinton Gutherson got on the end of a clever chip from Bevan French.
Halfback Jamal Fogarty converted his own try on the first set of the second half, and Parramatta were making it look easy as Gutherson grabbed his second and Corey Norman raced through with three minutes remaining.
Tariq Sims broke through for a late consolation try as the Eels finished up 32-11 winners.
Eels 32 (Clinton Gutherson 2, Kenny Edwards, Suaia Matagi, Jamal Fogarty, Corey Norman tries; 4 goals) def. Dragons 11 (Jai Field, Tariq Sims tries; 1 goal). Half-time: 17-4.

Eels outclass Warriors at Nines

Eels outclass Warriors at Nines
The Eels have booked their place in the quarter-finals after easing past the Warriors 17-0, in a result which ends the hometown side's hopes of advancing.
After a sloppy start to the match saw both teams waste some opportunities with the ball it was the Warriors who broke first, falling victim to a clever Corey Norman grubber in behind the line which left Bevan French to burn his marker for speed and score a bonus zone try.
Norman converted and Parramatta never looked back, scoring again through Honeti Tuha and Semi Radradra either side of half-time to secure the shut-out victory.
The Eels will now face Manly on day two to decide who tops the Piha Pool, while the Warriors are left to lament their worst ever finish at the tournament.
Eels 17 (Bevan French, Honeti Tuha, Semi Radradra tries; 2 goals) def. Warriors 0. Half-time: 11-0.

Eels edge Sea Eagles to top Piha Pool

Eels edge Sea Eagles to top Piha Pool
The Eels have survived a frantic comeback by Manly's new recruits to advance from the pool stage with a 17-12 win to set up a showdown with the Titans in the quarter-finals.
Despite being without stars Corey Norman and Semi Radradra, the Eels were the first team on the board as new recruit Nathan Brown latched onto his own grubber that was deflected and then ricocheted off the post to score in the bonus zone.
The blue and golds moved further ahead when try-scoring machine Bevan French scooped up a loose ball to give his side an 11-nil lead at the break.
The Sea Eagles hit back through Akuila Uate whose first try in Manly colours cut the gap to seven points before fellow new-recruit Curtis Sironen made it three tries from as many games to set up a grandstand finish.
It was fitting that Brian Kelly – who played for the Titans last year – crossed to give Manly the shock lead, only for stand-in skipper Tepai Moeroa to crash over late to see Parramatta advance from the pool stage unbeaten.
Eels 17 (Nathan Brown, Bevan French, Tepai Moeroa tries; 2 goals) def. Sea Eagles 12 (Akuila Uate, Curtis Sironen, Brian Kelly tries). Half-time: 11-0.

Eels whitewash Titans to advance to final four
Martin Gabor Sun 05 Feb, 2017, 12:48pm By Martin Gabor , National Correspondent , NRL.com
The Eels have set up a mouth-watering western Sydney derby against Penrith after they downed the Titans 14-0 in the second quarter-final of the 2017 Downer NRL Auckland Nines.
Having finished the pool stage with the best defensive record, the Eels were rarely troubled against a Gold Coast side that was starved of the ball for the entire contest.
It took nearly seven minutes but the Eels finally cracked what had previously been an impenetrable Titans defence to cross through try-scoring machine Bevan French out wide.
Semi Radradra is no stranger to the try-line either, although his second-half effort wasn't what we're accustomed to seeing from the semi-trailer.
Instead of a bulldozing run down the sideline, the Eels winger threw a huge dummy and fought his way over from close range to open up a 10-point buffer for the blue and golds.
A second try to French shortly after put the game out of reach and despite losing Clint Gutherson to the sin bin late in the contest, the Eels moved one step closer to back-to-back grand finals.
Eels 14 (Bevan French 2, Semi Radradra tries; 1 goal) defeated Titans 0. Half-time: 6-nil

Panthers progress with derby win
Martin Gabor Sun 05 Feb, 2017, 3:03pm By Martin Gabor , National Correspondent , NRL.com
The Penrith Panthers have stunned cross-town rivals the Parramatta Eels 13-0 in the first of the Downer Auckland Nines semi-finals to book their spot in the decider later in the afternoon.
Penrith's young guns continued to shock the rugby league world as they easily accounted for last year's winners who were without star playmaker Corey Norman (hamstring).
Bevan French has made a name for himself as one of the game's try-scoring elite, but it was his desperation in defence to deny Isaah Yeo a certain four-pointer that proved the biggest play of the opening exchanges.
The Panthers wouldn't be denied a second time as Waqa Blake scored an almost identical try to the one he produced in the quarter-final win over Manly, stepping through two Eels before out-sprinting Semi Radradra to the line.
Some frantic play by the Eels close to their line looked destined to lead to points, but not even French could take advantage of a broken line as Penrith's defence held firm to take a four-point lead into the break.
The Panthers started the second half with some measured kicks in behind the Parramatta defence, and the tactic paid dividends after four minutes when Malakai Watene-Zelezniak collected a 60-metre kick to double the lead.
Any hopes of Parramatta going back-to-back were extinguished two minutes from full-time when Blake cut back against the grain to power into the bonus zone to seal the win.
Panthers 13 (Waqa Blake 2, Malakai Watene-Zelezniak tries) def. Eels 0. Half-time: 4-nil
