Eels kick off nines campaign with a win
The Dyldam Parramatta Eels have kicked off their 2015 Dick Smith Auckland Nines campaign with a last minute victory (22 – 17) over the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles.
As predicted, the opening clash of the Nines was a fast, action packed, free flowing affair and the tries flowed from the opening minute. Brad Takairangi put the first points of the tournament on the board when he capitalised on a Manly handling error close to the try line before a quick Manly counter punch saw the scores level.
Reece Robinson looked dangerous down the right wing with ball in hand, and after a cut out pass from half back Chris Sandow, he crashed over for his opening four-pointer for the Blue and Gold with the Eels taking a 8-4 lead into half time.
The tries kept flowing after the break as Manly took the lead with a converted try, however, the hard running John Folau made the most of his first appearance in the Blue and Gold as he bulldozed his way over the line to put the Eels back in front.
As the game entered the final minutes, Manly looked to be in control after scoring a bonus-zone try, however backrower Kenny Edwards sparked the Eels attack with some fancy footwork in our own half. The backrower lifted the tempo of the game with a single run, and as the team rolled down the field, Robinson found himself in open space to fly down the sideline to score his second try of the match.
With minutes to go and a grand stand finish to kick off the tournament, Eels winger Halauafu Lavaka finished off a quick backline shift to score in the corner to secure the lead for the Eels, 22-17 and the Eels victory.

Game 2: Eels vs Knights @ 4:25pm Saturday
The Knights definitely look well-suited to the Nines. They have creative and zippy halves, very fast outside backs in the Mata’utia brothers, Dane Gagai and Jake Mamo and a pretty mobile forward pack. This one could go either way. I think our forward pack might give us the edge but I am worried about the speed that the Knights possess.
VERDICT: May go down to the bounce of the ball

Eels set for finals after defeating Knights
By Chris Kennedy
Sat, Jan 31, 2015 - 03:00PM
The Eels planted one foot in the finals zone and became the first team in the 2015 Auckland Nines with two wins, snatching a heart-stopping 21-15 victory over the Knights in the dying seconds of their second-round game.
The Eels shot out of the blocks with a blistering try to one of the stars of last year's tournament Semi Radradra. Receiving a floating ball out wide with just a hint of space, the winger skipped out of one tackle and shrugged off two more defenders on a long-range gallop to the line, running it around to the bonus zone despite the attention of further defenders for an early 7-0 lead.
The Knights hit straight back through Nathan Ross who raced through on a good kick to the corner from new recruit Carlos Tuimavave, but Parramatta stretched their lead through captain Chris Sandow, who produced an evasive angled run at the Knights' line to slide between two defenders out wide and make it 11-4.
The Eels started the second half much like the first, scoring after less than a minute through Corey Norman, whose devious dummy sent him through the line untouched to score right next to the bonus zone, but Semi Radradra missed the straightforward conversion.
A soft try to Chris Houston in the bonus zone kept the Knights in the hunt, with Tyrone Roberts' easy conversion making it 15-11 with five minutes to play.
Newcastle levelled up through Joe Tapine shortly after, but Roberts wasn't able to convert his try from out wide, meaning the scores stayed level.
Radradra then produced a stunning take from an attacking cross-field kick from Roberts that seemed destined to lead to a Sione Mata'utia try, before an absolute pinpoint kick from Chris Sandow inside his own 40 stopped just inside the Knights' dead-ball line, creating a goal-line dropout with enough time left for the Eels to have one set on the attack.
It proved vital, as a powerful solo try to Tepai Moeroa, reaching out to plant the ball with defenders all over him just seconds before full-time, handed the Eels a 21-15 win.
Eels back-rower Joseph Paulo said there was a simple reason for his team's successful freeflowing style at the Nines.
"We're just enjoying it," he said. "It was a key thing that Brad said to do. We worked hard in the off-season but now it's about having fun out there and enjoying playing together. It's all about putting a smile on our faces." Electric EelReply | Threaded | More

Rangitoto Pool
Eels 4 (+11), Knights 2 (+5), Dragons 2 (-7), Sea Eagles 0 (-9)
The Eels have all-but guaranteed themselves a finals berth after clocking up back-to-back 20-point plus victories over the Sea Eagles and Dragons, with their 43 points in two games the second-highest total of any side on day one. Halfback Chris Sandow put himself in the mix for the tournament MVP in the process, controlling play well off the boot and looking dangerous with ball in hand on day one. Manly will need some luck (a win over the Knights by eight or more while hoping the Eels beat the Dragons) if they are to progress, after dropping both their opening games. The Knights and Dragons look set to battle for second position, tied on two points each, although the Knights are in the box seat now with a 12-point advantage in differential. Giant Dragons winger Eto Nabuli is another on track for a possible man of the tournament award, producing three tries in two powerful games and setting up another. He is tied with Knights winger Jake Mamo at the top of the try-scoring list after day one following the Knights winger's hat-trick against the Dragons.

Dragons win against Eels
By Chris Kennedy
Sun, Feb 01, 2015 - 09:39AM
The Dragons have finished strongly to beat the impressive Eels on the back of another piece of Eto Nabuli magic, ending Manly's tournament by claiming a narrow 12-10 win.
With light rain making handling difficult, the first three possessions of the game finished with errors.
St George Illawarra dodged an early bullet when Corey Norman ran through to scores under the posts from a Chris Sandow chip only to be ruled offside.
The Dragons cashed in immediately when Kiti Glymin ran through to score off a Benji Marshall grubber to the corner.
A good set from the Eels in response was followed by a forward pass from the Dragons on their own try line to put the pressure on and it told straight away when a Sandow long ball found an unmarked Semi Radradra, who improved the position enough for Sandow to snap the conversion for a 6-4 halftime lead.
The Eels shot out of the blocks in the second half with one of the tries of the tournament. A good short ball to rampaging back-rower Tepai Moeroa bent the line back and his last-second offload to a flying Chris Sandow was juggled on the fly seemingly half a dozen times before he finally reeled it in time to send it to Reece Robinson who had a clear run to the line.
The Dragons were able to hit back following a pair of Eels errors when Marshall put impressive youngster Shannon Crook over with a short ball while sliding to the right at the Eels' line to close the gap to 10-8 with four minutes remaining.
A monstrous kick from Sandow on his own 30 sent Glymin running back to his own dead-ball line where Radradra was able to pin him in-goal, but a clever drop out from the Dragons got the ball back.
It proved crucial as a rampaging Nabuli got into space down the left flank was able to produce an amazing late offload to put Marshall over and claim the lead, the side holding on for the final minute to claim a 12-10 win.

Eels send defending champs crashing out
Sun, Feb 01, 2015 - 12:57PM
The Eels have knocked out defending champions North Queensland in the opening quarter-final with a tense, last-minute 17-11 win on the back of another Chris Sandow masterclass.
One of the stars of the weekend so far, Sandow looked to have opened the scoring three minutes in with a step and run at the line but the ball came free as he went to ground it.
Instead it was the Cowboys who went in first following a fast tap-restart from Kyle Feldt that caught the Eels napping, with hooker Jake Granville going through the line shortly after to score under the posts for a seven-point lead.
Some Sandow magic levelled the scores shortly after; he was flattened as he chased a chip he put in for himself but Corey Norman ran through and pickpocketed it from the defence and promoted the ball to the bonus zone.
After a tense end-to-end battle for five minutes of the second half, the Eels turned a nothing set into points when a Corey Norman cross-field kick was swooped on by Bureta Faraimo out wide.
A right-side shift started by Robert Lui caught the Eels short and Justin O'Neill ran around to score his fourth try of the weekend and level up at 11-all with under two minutes remaining.
Corey Norman provided the heroics for the Eels, a straightforward step-and-go at the line allowing him to jink over. Reece Robinson watched the shot-clock count down to one second before casually snapping the tricky field goal for a six-point lead in the shadows of full-time.
The Cowboys had one final chance as the final siren sounded but Eels half Luke Kelly won the foot race to a chip ahead from North Queensland and sent the ball sailing out past the dead ball line as his side celebrated a semi-finals berth.

Eels smashed by Rabbitohs
By Chris Kennedy
Sun, Feb 01, 2015 - 03:55PM
The Eels have capitulated against a highly-impressive Souths outfit who ran amok in the first semi-final with a 37-6 win.
The result puts the Rabbitohs into their second grand final in recent months, and they won't be short of momentum after dominating the match from the outset.
Parramatta spilled it from the first tackle off the kick-off, allowing Bryson Goodwin to slide over in the corner from the ensuing set.
Some strong charges from the Eels in the next set and a penalty led to Semi Radradra being held up in the corner, and more strong defence from the NRL premiers frustrated the Eels, who gave away a silly penalty allowing Souths to go the length of the field in handful of plays and score when Adam Reynolds ran through some ragged defence.
Things got even tougher for the Eels when a set packed with big charges and offloads led to Goodwin earning second try after a series of offloads got him into space on the right flank.
Parramatta compounded their woes by conceding a drop-out when Corey Norman watched the kick-off bounce thinking it was going out, before Matt King got yet another try when he latched onto Reynolds' cross-field chip out to the left to make it an 18-0 half-time score.
The Eels were more solid at the start of the second half; Tepai Moeroa showed his intent with a monstrous hit on Dave Tyrell from the first play, and a good set shortly thereafter drew a goal line drop-out. But when Moeroa spilled a difficult flat pass it gave Souths another opportunity.
King continued to wind back the clock with a bustling run that set up Angus Crichton for a simple run to the bonus zone, putting it out of reach for the Eels at 25-0.
The Eels continued to look disorganised in attack for the first time all weekend and another dropped ball gave Reynolds the chance to kick ahead for himself, easily winning the race to the line to make it ugly for Parramatta at 31-0.
The wheels were well and truly off as Norman spilled the restart and Souths hooker Issac Luke scored one of the softest tries he'll ever earn strolling over from dummy half.
A brilliant stepping run from Sandow put himself in space and the Eels in good position for impressive young back-rower Moeroa to charge over for his second try of the weekend and save the Eels the blushes of a nil score in their first Nines semi-final, but it made little difference as the Rabbitohs cruised to the final with a 37-6 win.
