Trial Three vs Manly: Team Announcement Hugh Humphreys Tuesday 18 February 2014 3:00 PM
The Dyldam Parramatta Eels have named a strong squad to play the Manly Sea Eagles in our final 2014 pre-season trial this Saturday at Brookvale Oval.
Head Coach Brad Arthur says he’s looking forward to testing his combinations ahead of the season starting.
“We’re taking a relatively strong squad of 22-23 players, and looking to fine-tune a few combinations and settle on a side of 17 against the Warriors [in Round 1],” he said.
It’ll be the first time this season fans will be able to see stars Jarryd Hayne and Will Hopoate in action, proudly wearing their Blue and Gold.
“They definitely will be getting a little bit of game time, not a huge amount, but we need to get them out there, make a few carries and tackles and get their timing,” Arthur said.
Kick-off is at 5pm for NYC, and 7.30pm for NRL - with tickets only available at the gates.
Parramatta Eels:
Zach Dockar-Clay Kenny Edwards John Folau David Gower Jarryd Hayne Will Hopoate Luke Kelly Darcy Lussick Tim Mannah Fuifui Moimoi Ryan Morgan Manu Ma’u Corey Norman Pauli Pauli Joseph Paulo Nathan Peats Semi Radradra Chris Sandow Ken Sio Ben Smith Peni Terepo Willie Tonga Vai Toutai

Sea Eagles too strong for the Eels at Brookvale

The Manly Sea Eagles have produced a stunning second half performance to defeat the Dyldam Parramatta Eles in the final trial leading into the 2014 NRL season.
The Eels got the ball rolling in the first half, with Ken Sio scoring in the corner after some fancy footwork.
Mark O’Dare scored for the Sea Eagles, with the conversion also missed to tie things up at 4-4.
Playing against a predominantly NSW Cup-side, the Eels finished the first half strongly, with tries to Ryan Morgan, Ben Smith and John Folau, with Chris Sandow and Norman adding the extras.
At half-time the Eels were ahead 20-4, and then the superstars from both sides took the field, with Jarryd Hayne and Will Hopoate joining the Eels side, and Stewart, Foran, Cherry-Evans for Manly.
After 874 days away from an NRL game on a religious mission, Will Hopoate made a solid return to the field, setting up a try for Vai Toutai in just his second touch of the football, to a mixture of cheers from the Blue and Golf Army and sighs form his former club.
Jorge Taufua fired up for the Sea Eagles, scoring two back to back tries after some quick passes out to the left edge.
A forward pass foiled him scoring a hat-trick, and also saw him leave the field for the night clutching his shoulder.
Matt Ballin added another six points for the home side, bringing the margin back to just two points.
A forward pass call ruined some magic from Jarryd Hayne to Willie Tonga, and a late try was scored by Jayden Hodges to put the Sea Eagles ahead.
Manly Sea Eagles 28 defeated Parramatta Eels 24.

Arthur: We didn't convert our opportunities.
Hugh Humphreys Sat, Feb 22, 2014 - 10:00 PM
Dyldam Parramatta Eels Head Coach Brad Arthur says tonight’s trial game against Manly Warringah Sea Eagles shows there’s still work to be done leading into the NRL season in a fortnight.
Arthur says he’s impressed with Will Hopoate’s first professional game in 28 months, with the centre showing plenty of effort on the field.
“He hasn’t done anything for two years so it was always going to be hard, and his first touch [assisting a try], hopefully that gives him that confidence,” Arthur said.
“He made some tough carries, and they ripped into him and he didn’t shy away from it, so I’d say it was a positive start.”
“He made his tackles and he’s going to get better as we get better around him, and obvious with improved strength he’ll get better as well, but it’s probably the first time he’s made some full-on serious tackles in two years.”
Despite the scoreline going against us 28-24, Arthur says it’s good to see which areas need to be improved.
“Obviously two different teams ran out for them and for us in the second half; and we’ve got a little bit of work to do, especially in the second half,” he said.
“Their halves have been working together for a long, long time, and their senior players too. So we’ve got a bit of work to do.”
Brad says he’s impressed with some of the efforts from our younger players, who put in a solid first half.
“Some of the young kids did really well in the first half; we created some opportunities and in the second half made three or four line breaks, we just didn’t have the support needed to convert that into points,” he said.
“But we created some opportunities, and we need to be a bit better there.”
