PARRAMATTA superstar Jarryd Hayne and NSW prop Tim Mannah are both in serious doubt for the Eels' season kick-off against Brisbane on Friday week after suffering knee cartilage injuries in last night's 26-10 trial loss to the Panthers.
After going up to take a bomb late in the second half, Hayne went down near his own tryline clutching his right knee.
Coach Stephen Kearney said both Hayne and Mannah would have scans today but at best normal cartilage injuries are usually a 2-3 week proposition.
Asked if there was any definitive news on the injuries after the game, Kearney said: "Not definitive but not as bad (as first thought).
Jarryd walked off the field. They will go for scan (today) but hopefully there is just a bit of cartilage damage. We'll have to wait and see."
Hayne tried his best to be upbeat in the rooms but will be fighting to be fit for Brisbane.
"It sort of went numb straight away. I've iced it for the last 20 minutes and it's sort of come good," he said. "At the moment it's just a bit of cartilage I think, so I will get some scans. It feels all right, it doesn't feel the best but I can just walk on it so hopefully the scans can be good."
It caps off a nightmare start to the 2012 season for the Eels who have also lost both their trial matches in disappointing fashion.
In comparison, the Panthers had everything to smile about last night.
Even without captain Luke Lewis and new buy Clint Newtown who both pulled out through injury, the Panthers were a far more disciplined outfit that ran around last year.
They finished with five tries to two winners after dominating the game.
Travis Burns crossed for a first half double and at the back Michael Gordon was electric in his race to be number one ahead of Lachlan Coote.
He finished with an outstanding solo try and kicked three goals in an impressive individual performance.
Down 18-4 at the break, Chris Sandow put the Eels back in the game with a try off a Hayne kick midway through the second half that reduced the margin to 18-10 but that was as close as the Eels got.
Last year the Eels went through the trials undefeated before the season ended in disaster - but now they'll be hoping trial form means little for a completely different reason.
"It was a little bit frustrating," Kearney said.
"There was a lot of dropped ball in the first half and we didn't build any real pressure. There was period there in the second half where we did sustain a bit of pressure on the Panthers and then we got an opportunity to build a bit of pressure but we have a fair bit of pressure in us before round one, that's for sure."
But for the Panthers, Cleary had plenty to be pleased about with the biggest problem now deciding where to play Lachlan Coote if he sticks with Gordon who starred in both trials.
Coote has always been a specialist fullback but Cleary didn't rule out the possibility of shifting him if he goes with Gordon at No.1.
"I actually thought both of them played well so we'll have to wait and see," Cleary said.
"There is a lot to take into account. A lot can happen in two weeks so we'll see what happens."
The Panthers capped off a superb performance with late tries to Kevin Kingston and David Simmons in the second half completely their impressive pre-season following last week's draw against the Knights.
"I thought the best thing out of the game was the fact that a lot of individuals got a lot of game time and improved on what they did last week," Cleary said.
"It's always good to be able to go into a season with individuals happy with where they are."
Halfback Luke Walsh also showed glimpses of positive play after this week signing a new three year deal to stay at Penrith.
"Luke has had a great off-season, done every session and trained really hard and is really trying to make a big fist of 2012," Cleary added.
"I thought he looked pretty good, he organises well. He got some pretty average service at times on last tackle and he seemed to come up with the good play so that is what you want your halfback doing.
"He can go into the first round with a bit of confidence."
