Parramatta junior had an injury-plagued career which denied him the opportunities he deserved. A busy organiser at pivot after moving from lock, Pattison was hospitalised on the eve of the 1979 semi-finals with a knee infection. He moved to Souths in 1981 and was chosen in NSW's State of Origin side but had to withdraw with an inner-ear infection on the morning of the match. The following year he made the City Firsts team and looked set to win a place in the NSW side, when he broke both collarbones in a freak tackle. After spending two more seasons with the Eels, Pattison provided great service to the Steelers but never got the chance to play rep football again. Illawarra's player of the year in 1985, he retired two years later due to a chronic back injury.
