I am pretty much against the Conference plan. It smells too much like a copy of the NFL. It has worked well over the years without any conference. Having said that, an upgrade in the playoffs may be a good idea, depending on what they come up with.
The conference plan would basically mean no 2 Sydney teams would ever play in a GF again.

NRL 2020: NRL receives pitch to save tens of millions annually with in-house broadcasts Adrian ProszenkoApril 11, 2020 — 4.30pm
The NRL has been approached about forming a venture to produce its broadcast content in-house in a move that could slash tens of millions of dollars in annual costs.
The Sun-Herald can reveal a third party with extensive global sports production experience has pitched a proposal to powerbrokers at Rugby League Central that could revolutionise the way rugby league telecasts are produced. The parties met to discuss the idea for the next broadcast deal, which could allow for an increased number of rights holders when the existing contract expires at the end of the 2022 season.
However, those discussions could be fast-tracked given the uncertainty around whether the current broadcast partners, Foxtel and Nine – publishers of The Sun-Herald – have the desire or means to fulfil their obligations.
The third party, which wishes to remain anonymous, is proposing to bring its infrastructure and expertise to the NRL to transform it into an organisation capable of broadcasting matches and associated content itself. It is estimated that production costs could be reduced by as much as 50 per cent for every game. The potential to reduce costs is timely given Rugby League Central spends almost $500,000 a day to run the competitionjust as the coronavirus outbreak has resulted in a massive downturn in revenue.
Those behind the pitch believe the quality of the product will be every bit as good as current telecasts. The initiative would also give the NRL creative and editorial control and could open the door for other sports to use the services. It also opens up the prospect of rugby league being on-sold to a mix of traditional broadcasters, including free-to-air and pay TV, as well as Netflix, Google, Optus and Amazon. Those platforms could also potentially be involved in simulcast arrangements with traditional partners.
The NRL has already committed $150 million towards its digital strategy, including a huge investment into nrl.com. That gives the game the option of providing more of its own exclusive content directly to subscribers or on-selling games to a variety of providers.
The NRL has been approached about a new way of producing broadcast material.
The Herald revealed in October that bringing production in-house was an option for the NRL. The model has been used overseas and locally, most notably by Supercars and tennis. A host of propositions – from ending simulcast arrangements, selling off State of Origin separately, and playing matches in quarters to increase advertising slots – have been workshopped with a view towards the next deal.
However, all of those options could immediately come into play should Nine and Fox seek a return to the table to renegotiate the current arrangement.
Another option for future broadcast cycles is the prospect of one partner filming all of the games and then on-selling some of the content to other parties.
Rugby league has long gone with a two-partner model of a free-to-air and subscription provider. However, there are growing concerns about whether Foxtel can afford to meet its commitments, while Nine may be looking to renegotiate its deal after accusing the governing body of years of mismanagement and wastefulness.
Nine chief executive Hugh Marks was livid about being left out of the planning to resume the current season, which was halted due to the coronavirus crisis. NRL boss Todd Greenberg isn’t expected to play a meaningful role in peace talks following Nine’s stinging statement, which said millions of dollars had been squandered over the years by "a bloated head office completely ignoring the needs of the clubs, players and supporters."
This week’s talks between the broadcasters and the NRL will determine the length of the current season. RLPA chief executive Clint Newton said more games didn’t necessarily mean more revenue.
"Not necessarily, it depends on the timing of matches," Newton said. "It’s about maximising the amount of revenue. Sometimes more doesn’t mean more revenue because it comes down to the operational costs and the expenses that will be incurred."

it wouldnt be the type os premiership I would prefer to see the Eels win, but having said that, something is better than what we have see over the past 34 years. It has been way to long. What would be great if the Eels could manage another 3 peat. Yes I know I am dreaming. I'd still give the premiership recognition, because you still have to play finals football. Anyway, if ScoMo is saying the lockdown will be another six months, then how is the NRL going to continue the season? Even playing on an island with no crowd is still not self isolation. The NRL is playing the same game as the government, continuing to delay the removal and setting new dates. I don't want two conferences either, because the great thing about rugby league is that you can meet anyone of the other teams in the competition in the grand final.

That PM isnt worth a damn is he? The NRL probably couldnt care less about him. The PM couldnt care less that the NRL dies because of lack of funds. He seems almost as bad as Trump. I hope it restarts on May 28th. I am looking forward to it.

I hope it restarts on May 28th. I am looking forward to it. Not sure what to believe but - NRL.com PM offers cautious support for NRL's return bid
Prime Minister Scott Morrison has offered cautious support to the NRL for its plan to restart the competition on May 28, echoing ARL Commission chairman Peter V'landys' comments that they must do so with public health being paramount.
The Prime Minister told Channel Seven on Tuesday morning that he welcomed the return of the Telstra Premiership as long as the NRL complied with the relevant health advice from the state and federal governments.
V'landys and NRL CEO Todd Greenberg have repeatedly stated throughout the coronavirus pandemic that they had been acting based on the advice of health professionals and governments, and would continue to do so in the lead-up to next month's proposed restart of the competition.
"I noticed the plans that they had to bring it back," Mr Morrison said on the Sunrise program.
"The health advice has to be paramount"

"Whether it happens to be football or whatever it happens to be the health advice has to be paramount and I have no doubt that the NRL and the other codes understand that and they will comply with that."
The well-known Cronulla Sharks fan said he wanted people in Australia to look forward to the eventual lifting of restrictions that have been brought in to control the spread of COVID-19.
"I welcome the fact that people are thinking ahead and working out ways they can get things back on a stronger footing," he said.
"That's certainly what we are doing as a national cabinet whether it's on the economy or health or any of those other issues.
"We've got to look forward to that other side because there is another side and Australians are helping us get to that other side, but there's some work to do yet and we are very focused on that and I'm sure we can take Australia there as soon as we can, but we've got to be careful not to get ahead of ourselves."
His comments come after NSW Police Commissioner Mick Fuller on Monday said he would have no objections if the NRL wanted all 16 teams to be based in the state.
Fuller said he would work with the NSW health department to ensure the move would be possible if the ARL Commission needed to bring the three Queensland sides, the Warriors, Melbourne and Canberra into the state if travel restrictions are still in place next month.
Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk on Sunday had said that she would not at this stage be giving the three Queensland-based NRL sides an exemption to cross the border into NSW unless they entered into a 14-day quarantine.

Best winger past 30 years. Grothe snr retired by 1989 or 1990. Round 3 predicted team for 28th May. Parramatta Eels 1.Clint Gutherson 2.Maika Sivo 3.Michael Jennings 4.Waqa Blake 5.Blake Ferguson 6.Dylan Brown 7.Mitchell Moses 8.Reagan Campbell-Gillard 9.Ray Stone 10.Junior Paulo 11.Shaun Lane 12.Ryan Matterson 13.Peni Terepo 14.Brad Takairangi 15.Marata Niukore 16.Kane Evans 17.David Gower Others: Will Smith, Jaeman Salmon, Daniel Alvaro, Oregon Kaufusi. Reed Mahoney's injury before the break appears to be Parramatta's biggest concern, although the dummy half will be close to a return by the time May 28 comes around. Eels coach Brad Arthur said he was leaning towards Ray Stone to replace Mahoney for the short-term, while they also have Will Smith and Rhys Davies as options at hooker. Parramatta forward Nathan Brown will miss rounds three and four after copping a dangerous conduct suspension before the hiatus with Peni Terepo the likely replacement.

why the hell would Will Smith be considered in anyway whatsoever. He sucks. David Gower is a great bench player, highly underrated, not given the chance he deserves most of the time. Would this be due to a janitor who thinks he can coach.
That team is pretty much as expected.

The PM has said virus restrictions to stay for a month and that would almost bring us to the NRL's date to recommence the season. Although, I personally believe lockdown will be at least another six months, because I saw an email from the Union saying they won a case for the Australian government to pay 130 billion for the next six months for loss of jobs. That must confirm what I was already thinking.

so if the PM says virus restrictions to go on for an extra month does that mean the NRL will be delayed even further?
