EELS
Off-contract 2022: Jakob Arthur, Dylan Brown (PO 2023), Haze Dunster, Wiremu Greig, Oregon Kaufusi, Ryan Matterson, Tom Opacic, Junior Paulo, Hayze Perham, Maika Sivo (PO 2023)
Re-signed: Clint Gutherson (2025), Reagan Campbell-Gillard (2025)
Signed with new club: Reed Mahoney (Bulldogs, 2026), Isaiah Papali’i (Tigers, 2025), Marate Niukore (Warriors, 2026), Ray Stone (Dolphins 2024)
Retirement: Keegan Hipgrave
Analysis: There’s a lot to unpack here. Prior to November 1, the Eels had a staggering 17 players either coming off contract at the end of 2022 or that had option clauses in their contracts. That number has dropped to 10. The good news is that skipper Clint Gutherson and the club finally agreed to terms and he inked a three-year extension. Reagan Campbell-Gillard is also staying put despite the bombshell he dropped on the Eels in October. The 28-year-old informed the club he won’t be taking up the options in his favour for 2023 and 2024, with his manager confirming Campbell-Gillard wanted to test his value on the market. Perhaps the star prop didn’t get the level of interest he was hoping for because he ended up re-signing with the Eels on a three-year deal. Utility forward Marata Niukore was the first to sign elsewhere when he inked a four-year deal with the Warriors in early November.Isaiah Papali’i — a member of the Dally M Team of the Year — rejected Parramatta’s offer and was the next player to defect, signing with the Wests Tigers on a deal said to be worth $600,000 per season. Reed Mahoney was spotted dining with Bulldogs powerbrokers, sending the rumour mill into a spin. The Bulldogs confirmed in an email to members that Mahoney has signed a four-year deal. Meanwhile, Ray Stone, although not a big name, was another blow to the Eels’ retention efforts with the utility signing a two-year deal with the Dolphins. All eyes are on Junior Paulo’s next move. Given Parramatta have lost so much talent they should be throwing the kitchen sink at the New South Wales Origin prop, but they have to compete with the Dolphins who are also interested in him. As it stands, the Eels have tabled an offer to Paulo. The ball is now in his court. Maika Sivo is reportedly considering rejecting the option in his favour as there’s some interest from overseas rugby union teams, while Keegan Hipgrave announced his immediate retirement in November, despite having another year to go on his contract. There’s big question marks hanging over the future of Ryan Matterson after News Corp’s Brent Read reported via Triple M in November that the Eels hadn’t tabled the second-rower an offer yet. Dylan Brown was linked to the Raiders and Warriors, but those clubs signing Jamal Fogarty and Luke Metcalf respectively put those rumours to bed.

Because our front office are a bunch of dimwits and dont know how to cheat the salary cap? Pretty simple really. Eels need admin that are good at their job, people that are really good at what they do and deliver which can make a big difference. That goes for any industry. At the Eels we don't offer beach apartments and great nightlife like the Roosters at Bondi, but a professional club is successful no matter where they are located.

I always thought Finch was a pretty decent guy but he is a lowlife.
