wow that is a memory lane thing. The very first game I ever went to was at the SCG. They had the game of the week there. Horrible surface with that cricket pitch in the middle. I noticed that the hill is gone there as well. Hill went a long time ago when Parra were playing in Grand Finals. 1981 GF - Hill was there. 1982 GF - Grand Stand under construction. 1983 GF - Grand Stand complete. I remember Monday night football for the very first time was in 1985 and all games were played at the SCG. It started in Round 16. Poor result, because I just looked at the stats and every game with the exception of 2 attracted crowds of less than 10,000.

10,000 is such a poor crowd for a professional sport. The rest of the professional sporting world, except for soccer in Australia, must laugh at the NRL?
I was at the 1981 Grand Final on the Hill, it was awesome.

Super League wanted to showcase the game, but Western Suburbs Magpies playing at Campbelltown was a real embarrassment. It was a football ground for a bush club. 1981 GF was awesome!! Last 20 mins, Parra ran away with it.

Western Suburbs 2 home grounds were a joke, Lidcombe oval was 4th rate as well.
The 81 Grand Final was closer than I thought it would be, Newtown were pretty damn good.

Lidcombe Oval, I've only seen when going past on the train, but it's just a hill with a small Grand Stand. You can see the entire ground from the train. 1981 GF had some fantastic tries.

the first Newtown try was so soft. Kenny was so good. That was such a freakish era for the Eels. The amount of local talent was amazing.

Kenny's 2nd try fooled everyone. Great game!! Newtown were looking for their first title since I think the 1940's.

I cant believe that Newtown were thrown out a few years later. They didnt deserve that. Wikipedia - Ejection from the Premiership Financial pressures forced the team out of the NSWRL Premiership at the end of 1983. The club continued to seek readmission, pursuing various different alternatives. One such alternative, proposed for the 1985 season (after a planned one-year sojourn from the League) involved a full relocation to Orana Park, at Campbelltown in south/west Sydney, and during this period the club was being run by their loyal stalwart and CEO, Frank Farrington. This plan involved a name change for the club, to the Newtown-Campbelltown Jets. The proposal, including a new logo with the new name on the traditional royal blue jersey, was approved by the football club directors. In the end these plans fell through, as the economic recession of the early 1980s prevented the club from finding a suitable buyer of the Newtown Leagues Club, on Stanmore Road, Stanmore. This left the Jets out of the premier Australian Rugby league competitions. In 1988 the Jets were able to sell their clubhouse, now the Cyprus Community Club of NSW, but by then time had elapsed and readmission to the top competition was not considered. It is worth noting, however, that for a short time in their final season of 1983, the Jets called Campbelltown home. As a show of commitment to the Campbelltown-Liverpool area, with a new junior league structure ready to be implemented at the Jets' instigation for the 1984 season, Newtown played six home games of the club's final season, at Orana Park in Campbelltown, including an opening round blockbuster against 1981-82 premiers Parramatta Eels, won 54-14 by a rampant Eels combination. On August 27 Newtown played their last match, defeating Canberra 9-6. Ultimately, when the final deal between Newtown and the Campbelltown-Liverpool junior rugby league fell through in 1984 and it was confirmed by 1985 that Newtown would not be returning to top flight competition, the Ashfield/Lidcombe-based Western Suburbs Magpies, suspended by the League at the same time as Newtown but having had the financial resources to earn a stay of execution, negotiated a deal for the 1987 season whereby Wests would move all home games to Campbelltown and claim ownership of the vast junior league in south-western Sydney.

interesting article, I didnt know some of that. I dont remember Newtown playing in Campbelltown. Things turned quite bad for them so quickly. 1981 Grand Finalists, but gone from the competition by 1984. Last time the Jets won a title was 1943. During WW2!! What about the Bears. They had some great players in the 90's - Jason Taylor, Billy Moore, Gary Larson, Mario Fenech. North Sydney Oval was an interesting ground. More of a Cricket ground. Poor Bears, they got punted too!!

The Bears didnt win a title after 1922, North Sydney oval was a great ground I went there a lot. You are right more of a cricket ground. Manly screwed over the Bears in there joint venture. The Bears would still be around if the didnt join with that asshole club Manly.

That joint venture was a disgrace and Manly and North Sydney hated one another. That finished the Bears good and proper. The Bears want back, on the Central Coast, but I don't think it will happen.

The Bears should have never gone anywhere near that evil Manly. They lost a lot in that joint venture and now dont really exist any longer. Manly really are an evil club.
