Reed Mahoney promoted to Parramatta Eels full squad amid Issac Luke rumours
Parramatta Eels have extended the contract of young hooker Reed Mahoney, promoting him to the full-time squad in the process.
The 20-year-old had one year to run on his development contract, but is expected to have an increased role in the side in 2019.
His new deal will now keep him at the club until at least the end of 2020.
Mahoney played nine matches in his debut season last year, his potential a bright spot in a tough season.
The Queenslander potentially has a chance to stake a claim for the starting dummy-half role in Brad Arthur's team this season.
However, the club has recently been linked with a move for veteran Warriors hooker Issac Luke.
If Luke was to arrive, Mahoney's first-grade minutes would be severely limited, with the Eels drawing criticism for potentially stifling the youngster's growth.
Parramatta also have 24-year-old, 47-gamer Kaysa Pritchard in competition for the number nine jersey, though the injury-prone rake is currently dealing with a shoulder complaint and may miss the start of the season.
If Mahoney does end up as first-choice hooker, he will join one of the competition's youngest spine, with Dylan Brown expected to given first crack at the five-eighth role.
Brown,19, is yet to make his first-grade debut, while Clint Gutherson and Mitchell Moses, both 24, will line up at fullback and halfback respectively.
