1977 Grand Final: Parramatta 9 drew St George 9 at SCG
St George and Parramatta played out the first drawn grand final in competition history, before 65,959 fans at the SCG. Parramatta went into the match with injury problems and started Johnny Peard on the bench, despite a corked thigh to his prodigious bombing leg. They also had to battle a 6-1 penalty count in the first half after referee Greg Cook savaged John Kolc for repeated scrum infringements. Goodwin responded with two penalty goals from his first four attempts, before scoring a magnificent try right on halftime-breaking the line and then chasing his kick. It was all St George who led 9-0.
Parramatta began the second half strongly and fought their way back with Cronin kicking accurately for three goals. With Goodwin nullified after being flattened during a scramble for a bomb, replacement kicker Tony Quirk missed a telling shot for goal and with five minutes to go the Dragons led 9-6.
Two minutes later, Parramatta seized their chance. Working the ball down the Members Stand side, Cronin held the ball up to put Price through a gap, who lobbed an overhead pass inside for Ed Sulkowicz to cross out wide and level the scores. Unfortunately for success-starved Eels fans, Mick Cronin, the game's most prodigious point scorer, missed the most important goal of his career.
Shortly after, the siren sounded and the teams changed ends to play ten minutes each way of extra time. John Chapman and Quirk were unsuccessful with shots at goal for the Dragons and with one hundred minutes played, scores were still level and a replay was called.
St George 9 (E.Goodwin try, Goodwin 2, J.Chapman goals) drew with Parramatta 9 (E.Sulkowicz try, M.Cronin 3 goals). Referee: G.Cook. Crowd: 65,959.
